The statute in four lines
Per s.316.1895 F.S. #status/verify current statute text:
- School zone speed limit: not less than 15 mph except by local regulation; not more than 20 mph in an urbanized area.
- In effect only 30 minutes before, during, and 30 minutes after pupil arrival (including a regularly scheduled breakfast program) and dismissal — not all day.
- Signs must display the times of enforcement or use flashing beacons (time clock, automatic device, or manually activated); portable signs only during arrival/dismissal hours.
- Zones established after July 1, 2008 need the “Speeding Fines Doubled” notice. Violations per ch. 318.
Warning
Beacon operation windows are the classic failure: they must match THIS school’s actual bell schedule, including early-release days — a beacon flashing at the wrong time undermines enforceability. Get the schedule in writing from the district.

Review checklist
- Zone speed and limits consistent with s.316.1895 (15–20 mph band, urbanized-area cap)?
- Sign legend times match the current bell schedule, or beacons provided?
- Beacon programming covers breakfast-program arrival + all dismissal variants?
- “Speeding Fines Doubled” sign present (post-2008 zone)?
- Signs/markings/crosswalks match the current Standard Plans school series?
- Crossing-guard locations and ADA ramps coordinated, not assumed?
