Hard lines (Florida) #status/verify current rule text at fbpe.org:

  • An EIT cannot sign/seal or hold out as a PE; engineering work is performed under a PE’s responsible charge — meaning genuine supervision/control, not a signature drive-by. Your job: make responsible charge REAL by surfacing everything material.
  • Escalate, always: public-safety judgment calls · deviations from standards · client pressure toward a conclusion · anything you’d hesitate to explain aloud · scope beyond your competence (competence is an ethical boundary, not an ego one). Practice that protects everyone: assumptions documented with basis (the project note’s assumptions table) · uncertainty stated professionally (“preliminary pending X”; “sensitive to assumption Y”) · never let confidence outrun verification — overconfidence is the junior failure mode, and documented humility reads as competence to good PEs · engineering judgment vs official criteria kept distinct in writing (“Per FDM §—” vs “In our judgment—”, the latter being the PE’s sentence to own). Agency/permitting reality: development review, access/driveway permits, signal warrants, turn-lane approvals each have an owner and a process — map them per agency note; an EIT coordinates and prepares; the PE and the agency decide. When something already went out wrong: tell the PE immediately, with the fix drafted. Speed and candor are the whole game.
